WiFi sensor is truly wireless

The SmartEdge Sensor Series 4, for Fluke Networks' AirMagnet Enterprise wireless-intrusion-prevention system, truly is wireless in the sense that it eliminates the need for Ethernet cabling to perform the intrusion-detection. The sensors feature three internal radios and a wireless-connect feature, thereby offering "quick and easy installation," the company says, as it "instantly extends WiFi security and performance monitoring, providing immediate coverage in the face of explosive wireless LAN growth and the bring-your-own-device [BYOD] phenomena."  Chia-Chee Kuan, vice president of Fluke Networks' wireless LAN business unit, said that between increasing wireless-LAN penetration and BYOD, "the areas organizations need WiFi performance and monitoring coverage is increasing exponentially," and stating that SmartEdge technology "eliminat[es] roadblocks caused by Ethernet cabling."  In environments where cabling is already installed or is not prohibitive from a cost or logistics standpoint, the SmartEdge Sensor can leverage is two 802.11n 3x3 MIMO antennas, plus its antenna for dedicated spectrum analysis, to enable perpetual security monitoring, scanning and rogue detection, Fluke Networks says.
